Other Common Questions Before Buying A Pole Dancing Pole

Buying a pole dancing pole can be a bit confusing at first as there are so many options to think about. Here are some of the answers to the most common questions asked.

  • Static or spinning?
  • Fixed, portable, removable or free standing?
  • How much does a pole cost?
  • Should I buy a 45 or 50mm pole?
  • Which company is safe?

The answers to these questions are all below.

How Much Do Pole Dancing Poles Cost?

The lowest cost would be around fifty pounds though the products that retail at this price are unlikely to have been made to the highest quality. A top of the range design would set you back closer to hundred and twenty pounds, for this investment you should be able to have your very own pole that will last you many years.  If you want to use the pole for advanced tricks and spins then do not buy a pole that costs less than £110, $180, €130. Poles which cost less than this are often for simply walking around and not for pole fitness.

Be selective when choosing equipment as there has been a lot of concern over cheaper pole dancing poles which are designed as novelty items and are not suitable for the high impact use that modern pole dancing puts upon them. Some cheaper poles have been deemed highly dangerous due to cheaply manufactured plastic parts and sharp metal edges.

Fixed, Removable, Portable or a Free Standing Poles?

Poles can be a permanent fixture in your room or you can buy one which you can move out of the way easily if it’s going to be in the way for the occasion.  Consider the availability of space in your home as well as whether you want the product to be on prominent display.  The added advantage of a removable design is that you can take it with you to a variety of location such as a party or a friend’s house.

Fixed poles are held in place by using screws to secure them into a ceiling joist. They are made from one piece of pole which is cut to a certain length, they are secured in place by ceiling and floor bolts. They cannot easily be moved.

Removable poles do not require construction and are held in place using tension. Tension poles have taken the world by storm by providing pole dancers with fully removable and portable poles which can be adjusted to fit many ceiling heights.  Tension poles do not require any screws are strong enough for inverted plus spinning moves, have non marking rubber for non-slip ceiling grip, you can put them up and take them down in minutes, have self levelling bases and are fully adjustable.

It is possible to obtain removable poles which are not tension mounted but have a permanent ceiling fixture.  These poles may make you feel a little safer but you would have to have a huge bracket in your front room. These poles may be more suited to a pole dancing studio.

Portable poles are similar to removable poles except the pole comes in several sections secured together by removable joints. The poles can then be packed away in a handy carry case and stored away or taken to a friends house if you like to practice in several places. The poles are tension mounted and do not require any permamant ceiling mounts.

Free Standing Polesare both portable and do not require fitting to a certain sized ceiling. They are availble with or without a stage. Portable pole dancing poles not have contact with the ceiling. These poles are free standing. They have a large solid base which is sturdy enough to support the free standing pole. These are great if you have a ceiling that is too high for a removable pole, you don’t have a suitable ceiling to attach a pole to or you like to pole outside. The only downside of these poles is that they do not have a very long pole length so any tricks have to be completed fairly low to the ground. These poles are also very expensive. Mainly used for performances, schools who run lessons in multiple venues, schools who like to go and take lessons in exciting outside places such as parks and gym usage where the ceiling height is too high for permanant or removable poles. Pole stages have a platfrom around the base of the pole which is raised of the floor which is used as a stage.

Static or Spinning Poles?

Pole dancing pole can either be stationary or can be spinning poles. When dancing on a spinning pole you control how fast you spin by leaning in towards or away from the pole. Static poles you make yourslef spin by using momentum when you launch from the floor. When performing inverts you will spin when on a spinning pole making a very pretty effect, but when perfroming the same move on a static pole you will not spin around. Most spinning poles have the option to convert into a static pole so you have the best of both worlds. Spinning poles tend to cost a little bit more that static poles.

38, 45 or 50mm Pole Dancing Pole?

Poles are available in 3 diameters: 38, 45 and 50mm. 50mm poles are common in the UK although 45mm are becoming much more popular and this year the first competitions are taking place on 45mm poles. $5mm are very popular in Austrailia. It is easier to grip a pole which has a bigger diameter. If you train on a pole with a small diameter you will find it hard to progree to using a pole with a larger diameter, however if you start using a 50mm pole you will find it easier to use a poel with a smaller diameter. Very few companies sell poles which are 38mm however some research suggests that using a pole with a smaller diameter will lead to less injuries, presumbably because you can get a better grip on the pole. I would buy a 45mm pole if I was buying a pole for the first time.

Material

You will also need to think about the material that the pole is manufactured from. A lot will depend upon your experience and your moves. A stainless steel design is more slippery than those coated with brass or chrome. For advanced moves it is best avoiding the stainless steel options as you will need the best grip to help support yourself.

Try before you buy.

If possible try out a few designs before spending your money. Maybe there is a friend who also has a pole you can practice with to get a feel for the type of metal before spending your hard earned money. Perhaps there is also a retailer in your town or city that would allow you to try out a pole before you buy it.

Finally never overlook the safety aspect of using a dancing pole. It would not look so sexy or feel so desirable if the product comes crashing down the first time you try and support your full weight on it. Only invest in a design that you know is strong enough to hold your body without it starting to lean over. It should be as sturdy as possible if you are to get the maximum benefit.
